Jennifer's First Sale!

I got the news yesterday from Artworks that one of my pieces sold! This is one day before our art comes down off the walls. It was a pleasant surprise and an encouragement. When I was in school I used to doodle random designs on my notebook pages - this piece of art was an offshoot of those doodles from long ago.

2nd Art Showing

Thanks to Jennifer's boyfriend, Chaz, Jacki had an opportunity to show off her HATs! series of acrylic paintings at a scholarship event held by Beulah Road Baptist Church. The event was held at the Jefferson Lakeside Country Club. Chaz connected us to Earnestine Epps-Locke, who owns a hat shop downtown called Chic Chapeau(200 E Grace Street). She graciously allowed us to be a co-exhibitor alongside her hat/clothing vendor table at the scholarship event. Many compliments were received on her work. We look forward to future opportunities to partner with Ms. Epps-Locke and hopefully introduce the "Accessory Artist" to more people!

The Art Opening

The art show opening went well. We had a number of people circulating through our space and we enjoyed talking to people and meeting other artists. A good friend came from out of town with her husband to support me and a couple of my mom's current and former coworkers came by as well. It was interesting to see which pieces people responded to - my boyfriend elicited comments from people walking through the gallery and got some video so I was able to hear some feedback. Mom and I learned a lot from this experience and look forward to more opportunities to show our work. Thanks to those who came out to the show and those who sent messages of support before the show. There is more to come!

The story behind the art: "Calm in the Storm"

When I was working in New Orleans, one of my jobs was to drive to the homes of disaster victims who had requested emergency housing to see where the FEMA trailer could fit on the property. At one home in Gentilly, my coworkers and I arrived at the house at about the same time as the homeowner. The homeowners asked if I had seen the inside of any flooded houses. I said no, and he motioned for me to follow him. He unlocked the door and we walked into the living room. The walls were covered in mold and mildew. The owner pointed out that the mold stopped right below a large white cross he had on the wall. We both paused, taking in the moment. I wondered what significance this could have. I knew it was meaningful to him and perhaps one had to seek some kind of sign, some indication that God was present, even in the midst of so much devastation. We then proceeded to peek into other rooms – the water had come through and swirled his belongings like a washing machine – large, heavy pieces of furniture were upended and belongings were strewn everywhere.

One week to go!!

Mom and I are excited as the time for our first art show approaches. Next week it will be time to go in and figure out how we want to display our work on each wall. This week we are putting the finishing touches on our art pieces, and getting out price list together.

If you can't make it to the show we will have pictures from opening night on this blog next weekend so you can see how it all unfolded.

First Art Show-March 25, 2011

Mom and I are excited as our first art show approaches March 25, 2011. The idea for an art show was discussed, hinted at, and speculated upon for many years. Glad we finally made it happen. Art Works Studios and Galleries is a great place for artists who want to get their work in front of the public. There is no jury determining whether you can display in the gallery. You pay a fee to rent the space and your work stays on the wall for a month after the 4th Friday art opening. We'll have about 15-18 pieces of acrylic and watercolor art on display. Our idea was to do some crossover between our work, thus the title "Blends". I used some themes and patterns from my mom's art and created my own pieces. Other than some residual anxieties about the process of hanging the work, we are ready to go. It will be an exciting night. Please join us!

About Us

Artist Jacki Harris

Call me the “Hat Artist” and soon I’ll be known as the “Accessory Artist”, since my current artwork consists of renditions of women who have consistent characteristics and who all wear fantastic hats! Some of the characteristics are only one eye showing, full luscious lips and a very thin neck. The first five have a hat that I chose from the internet, but future HATs! Pictures will feature hats from all over the world and of various eras. Each HATs! Picture will come with an accompanying card that explains what era the hat is from and other historical data, all signed by the artist. . . me! Next, I plan to pursue paintings that emphasize shoes (SHOEs!), purses (PURSEs!) and also umbrellas (UMBRELLAs!). Watch what’s coming!

All work is done with a great deal of pride and personal commitment to excellence because I am spiritually connected to each and every work and take each one very seriously.

Artist Jennifer Harris

My style continues to evolve, but most of my work is acrylic paints on canvas. I start with a seed of an idea - a pattern, a feeling, an experience- grab the brushes and the paint and see what unfolds on the canvas. I have been working with watercolor and acrylic for less than a year and find it to be a great creative release. I can create a piece of art using colors you select to match your taste and style.
